They showed off a whole heap of stuff on their Japanese site too, which is linked to in that IGN article.
A photo feature, an avatar feature, weather, a new Zelda clip, a new Pokémon clip, some Virtual Console games, and more. It all looks rather slick, I'm looking forward to it

19th, not 17th. Weird that's it's being released on a Sunday. Here's a nice little summary from joystiq: http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/14/u-s-n ... eblogging/
Confirmed price of $249.99 on Nov. 19 in U.S. with Wii Sports pack-in. Worldwide debut is in U.S. Reggie: "One price, one config, one color: white." Included in box seems similar to Japanese system, besides Wii Sports.
Games will cost roughly $49.99.
Virtual console games will be $5 for NES, $8 for SNES, $10 for N64. Super Mario 64, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong and Legend of Zelda at launch.
Thirty titles in U.S. by year's end, about half at launch. Launch games include (compiled from GoNintendo/Engadget): The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Excite Truck, Trauma Center, Madden 07, Need for Speed: Carbon, Elebits, Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz, Metal Slug Anthology, Rayman: Raving Rabids, Red Steel, Barnyard, Cars, Avatar, Blazing Angels, Far Cry: Vengeance.

That's pretty slick, glad to see these things explained a bit. Also, I can still access this site, unlike most of the others.

The price is amazing, the Virtual console games have kept my interest since I first heard about the feature, and with Twilight Princess being a launch title I'm just simply not going to know what to do with myself!

And, If I'm correct, $20 "Wii Points" gift card for use with accessing new channels and buying VC games comes in box?

Sadly, I don't think so. However, if my Japanese skills are up to scratch (they aren't), I think you get Wii Points with the Classic controller.
Full info about the various channels and stuff in the News thread at the top of the board.
Also, DVD playback is OUT

Bah!
But, they do make a good point. Really, who doesn't have a DVD player these days? Plus I've got a PS2, Xbox, and 360 ... so come to think of it, it doesn't seem like a bad decision.

hmmm, kinda sucks for my situation, in regards to the DVD thing. My PS2 isn't exactly reliable as it once was and I don't see myself purchasing a DVD player anytime soon. I was really, really hoping for DVD movie playback along with digital/optical audio output on the Wii. I guess that's hoping for too much. Ah well.

I am really sorry if these links have been posted before or if they should be in another topic but i found some cool videos and box art.
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/topics/wii_preview/movie/lineup.html
http://wiimedia.ign.com/wii/image/article/732/732707/live-from-new-york-20060914064954057-000.jpg
this last one is a little fuzzy but its still alright.
http://wii.advancedmn.com/images/media/wiiny_006.JPG
Sorry this is in Japanese but if you see some of the video's on pages 7 it shows you that you can store some pictures on the Wii. same goes for movie playback, including selfmade apparantly. Also a Mii channel, where you can create your own character, used in those wii sports games maybe even wario ware.
These are only things i have found and been told about. So if they are not true please don't flame me.

Yeah, I was expecting it. Matt brought up some great points in his blog. Besides, I have a DVD player in my computer, and my roommate has an Xbox 360. I didn't really need one. I prefer some of the other features they gave it instead.

Where'd that release date speculation thread go?
I'd like to see if there really was a sensible hint in that article...

The only place that I saw it was IGN, but I'm sure it's everywhere.
Besides, I can't get to IGN, graw.

Anyone notice that the avatar creator seems to make a similar character to the ones found in Wii sports? Wouldn't it be cool to play as YOURSELF?
Just speculation on my behalf.

Dan, you can do a create-an-avatar type thing where you can basically create yourself. The guy at the conference tried to do Samuel L. Jackson (of all people) and did a decent job at it from what I've read. It also gets stored into the remote so when you play your controller on anyone else's system, you'll be right there.

Nintendo tends to do Sunday releases a lot if not most of the time. And November is always a huge month for them. Things are looking great.

Point 1: That's still not a bad deal.
Point 2: s**t!

That better not be true or I will have to open up a can of whoop-ass.
edit: now that I think about it, Nintendo announced Wii wouldn't have the same launch failure in Europe like the PS3, so it's probably a mistake.

What's this I hear about $39.99 for a remote and $19.99 for a nunchuck adapter? $60 to play with one other person. You get the Wii Sports, but it will cost you $180 to play with three friends. : |
That sucks out loud.

Obviously, the PS3 is the more cost-effective solution.
